What is Kuntscher nail?
Küntscher invented what is known as the Küntscher nail, an internal fixation device used to maintain the position of the fracture fragments during healing. The nail is rigid and has a cloverleaf shape in cross-section.
What is a tibial nail?
Currently available tibial nails have locking screw holes close to both ends, in multiple orientations, for better fixation of proximal and distal fractures. The nails may be either solid or cannulated (hollow). Solid nails may protect somewhat against infection because they have no internal dead space.
How do you do interlocking nails?
The nail is coupled to an insertion handle via a nail extension. It is introduced along the anatomical axis of the femur and inserted into the medullary canal of the proximal segment by hand or gentle hammering. The fracture is aligned while the nail is further advanced into the distal segment.

What is a tibial nail made of?
Modern tibial nails are composed of either a titanium alloy or stainless steel and provide a variety of locking options at their proximal and distal ends.
