What exactly is the Evenstar?
Evenstar is an old term for the “evening star” of astronomy, denoting the planet Venus or (less commonly) the planet Mercury.
How does Arwen give up her immortality?

Anyhoo, it appears to be used through the film as a sign of Arwens ‘immortality’, so the breaking should signify her choice of staying with Aragorn. What happens to Aragorn?
He died at the age of 210, after 122 years as king. The graves of Merry and Pippin (who had died in Gondor 58 years earlier) were set beside his. He was succeeded on the throne by his son, Eldarion. Arwen, heartbroken by the loss of her husband, died shortly afterwards in Lothlórien.

No. In the movie it only breaks in his dreams. You can see it around Aragorn’s neck as they approach the black gate. Not the scene immediately after he drops the Seeing Stone when he’s riding, but the next one where they arrive at the black gate.

The Evenstar necklace symbolized love. Arwen gave it to Aragorn as a reminder of how much she loves him. It shows that nothing, not even her own immortality, is more important than her love for him. The necklace can also be seen as a symbol of hope. It was able to get Aragorn, and possibly Frodo, through tough times.

Peter Jackson made the Evenstar necklace in reference to this white jewel, although it symbolizes more on her love for Aragorn… a Tolkien reference to a woman “giving her favor” to him, if you will. The Evenstar got it’s name from Arwen herself, as she is called that by the elves of Rivendell in the books.
