What does the trachea do?
Your trachea, or windpipe, is one part of your airway system. Airways are pipes that carry oxygen-rich air to your lungs. They also carry carbon dioxide, a waste gas, out of your lungs. When you inhale, air travels from your nose, through your larynx, and down your windpipe.
How do lungs clean themselves out?
Mucus (a thick liquid) is produced in the walls of the small airways to help keep your lungs clean and well lubricated. It is moved by tiny hairs called cilia that line your airways. They move back and forth sweeping a thin layer of mucus out of your lungs and into your throat. Unwanted materials stick to the mucus.
How does the cilia work?
The function of cilia is to move water relative to the cell in a regular movement of the cilia. This process can either result in the cell moving through the water, typical for many single-celled organisms, or in moving water and its contents across the surface of the cell.
Can you cough up hair?
Trichoptysis (rare plural: trichoptyses) is an extremely rare symptom, whereby patients cough up hair. It is highly specific for rupture of a mediastinal teratoma into the tracheobronchial tree, however it is not pathognomonic as several articles claim (see below) 1,2.
What happens if the cilia Cannot push out all the excess mucus?
Mucus and cilia are a primary defense mechanism for the lungs. If there is a problem with either the mucus or the cilia, the airways may become blocked and the harmful germs and particles can be trapped in the lungs, causing damage.

Extending from each hair cell are fine, hairlike cilia; displacement of the cilia alters the electrical potential of the cell. The sensory cells are called hair cells because of the hairlike cilia—stiff nonmotile stereocilia and flexible motile kinocilia—that project from their apical ends.
