What is DofE Residential?
A DofE residential is an opportunity for a young person to step outside of their usual environment, routine and social setting, giving them the opportunity to find out more about themselves and who they see themselves as.

THE DUKE of EDINBURGH’S AWARD EXPEDITIONS (DofE) Action4Youth are Approved Activity Providers and offer planning, training and expeditions at all 3 award levels for 14-24 year olds.
How far do you walk for gold DofE?
How far do you walk on DofE? The distance you walk per day on DofE varies between awards. A standard distance to walk is 16km per day on Bronze, 19km per day on Silver, and 23km per day on Gold.
Can you shower on DofE?
DofE teams may use basic facilities such as drying rooms and toilets/showers.
What is the residential part of Gold DofE?
At Gold level, in order to achieve your award you need to complete an extra section – a residential. A ‘residential’ for Gold DofE means a programme that spends 5 days and 4 nights away from home on a shared activity with people that you have never met before.
Do you have to do residential gold DofE?
#1 Join an official DofE Gold residential Each year the Duke of Edinburgh Award organises residentials that candidates can sign up to join. You must be aged 16-25 and while these events will meet the criteria of your residential, completing DofE isn’t a requirement for joining.
Can you do DofE expedition on your own?
12. All expeditions must be by the participants’ own physical effort, without motorised or outside assistance.
Are there toilets on DofE?
Most of the campsites we use will have toilets – some may be proper flushing toilets, others may be more basic portaloos. If you are wild camping then you will not have a toilet, but we will provide you with a trowel and our instructors will discuss camp hygiene with you during the pre-expedition training.
How heavy should my D of E bag be?
As a guide you should be aiming for a fully packed rucksack with group kit, personal kit, food and water to weigh around 15kg. The lighter your bag is, the more you will enjoy your expedition. If your bag is too heavy you will struggle to lift it let alone walk with it for hours.
What is the purpose of sectioning the route?
The object is to split the overall route into sections that can be readily undertaken in conditions of poor visibility such as in cloud, fog or at night. In addition to the compass bearing, for each leg the total distance will be measured as well as the height gained or lost and the steepness of the ground.
What changes have been made to the residential section?
We have made a number of temporary rule changes to the Residential section to enable opportunities to go ahead when it’s safe to do so. This includes participants returning home each evening to sleep. However, the residential must still include evening activities and an evening meal.
Can a carer be present in the residential section?
Yes – if a young person is reliant on a carer then they may be present. However, the Residential section is all about being away from the people you know, so a carer should only attend if it is really necessary.
What are the current flexibilities for the residential section?
Due to the effects of COVID-19 there have been some temporary flexibilities allowed for the Residential section. The flexibilities are in place until 31 December 2022. – Residentials can be run with a minimum of four participants.
