What is dependency indemnity?
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a tax free monthly benefit paid to eligible survivors of military Servicemembers who died in the line of duty or eligible survivors of Veterans whose death resulted from a service-related injury or disease.
How long do DIC benefits last?
How Long Does Dependency and Indemnity Compensation Last? Once granted, DIC is permanent for surviving spouses, unless the surviving spouse remarries prior to turning 57 years of age. For surviving children, DIC usually lasts until the age of 18 (or 23 if the child is still in school).
How do you qualify for dependency and indemnity compensation?
Surviving Children If you are a surviving child, you may be eligible for DIC if the Veteran parent: Died in the line of duty, OR • Died as a result of a service-connected injury or disease. You also must be unmarried and either: Under the age of 18, OR • Between the ages of 18 and 23 and currently attending school.
Is SBP going away?
In 2022, SBP will be reduced by no more than one-third of the amount of DIC received. In 2023, the SBP-DIC offset will be eliminated in total, so that surviving spouses eligible for both programs will receive both SBP and DIC in full, effective January 1 (paid as of February 1).
Can I collect DIC and Social Security?
Many survivors do not know that they can receive both DIC benefits and Social Security benefits at the same time. Deceased veterans earned both the DIC benefit and the Social Security benefit through their work and their military service.
Can I receive DIC and survivors pension?
A surviving spouse can’t get both Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) payments and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) at the same time, since both payments would technically be paid to them on behalf of the late veteran.
How much is VA DIC benefit?
