Can I put a long shaft on a short shaft boat?
While you really can’t run a short shaft OB on a long shaft transom you can run a long shaft OB on a short shaft transom. Performance and draft depth won’t be optimal but if you have a long shaft, or can get one cheap, go for it. I did it for about a year and a half and it worked ok.

You will drag your motor on the ground. You will have terrible performance, may not even get on plane depending on size of boat. Probably will lug due to hanging so low and could burn a hole through a piston. You really have to raise that engine up.
What happens if outboard is too high?
Too high usually results in low water pressure, prop letting go in turns, or lack of bow lift are usually the telltale signs. Sometimes porpoising is caused by too much bow lift and dropping the motor will give it more bite and make it worse.
