What happened Armadale Castle?
Armadale Castle is a ruined country house in Armadale, Skye, former home of the MacDonalds. After 1855 the part of the house destroyed by fire was replaced by a central wing, designed by David Bryce. Since 1925 the castle, abandoned by the Macdonald family, has fallen into ruin.

The current Clan Chief is Godfrey James MacDonald of MacDonald, 8th Lord MacDonald. He became high chief of Clan Donald in 1970 and sits on the Board of Trustees of the Clan Donald Lands Trust.

The Macdonalds – or Clan Donald – were the Lords of the Isles and sit at the heart of the history of Gaeldom. Our Museum follows their story through triumph, bloodshed and trauma from the demise of the Lordship of the Isles, through the Jacobite risings, to the sweeping cultural changes where clansmen became crofters and chiefs became landlords.

Our charity, Clan Donald Lands Trust, has achieved much since it was founded 50 years ago. The Library & Archives are housed in the Museum building. Covering all aspects of Scottish culture and history, the Library has one of the best reference collections in northwest Scotland.
