What does Spirax Sarco Engineering do?
Spirax Sarco has 20 years of experience of providing hot water system improvements, reducing risks of Legionella.
How steam is distributed?
The steam distribution systems utilize steam by heating water past the boiling point to for steam. The steam is then distributed throughout the process through steam mains to the appropriate location. The condensed water is collected to the boiler for reheating.
Should steam lines be sloped?
Steam lines should be arranged to fall in the direction of flow, at not less than 100 mm per 10 metres of pipe (1:100). Steam lines rising in the direction of flow should slope at not less than 250 mm per 10 metres of pipe (1:40).
How many employees does Spirax Sarco have?
We employ over 8,200 diverse, knowledgeable and skilled people in a wide variety of roles from technical engineering to product development, manufacturing to technical sales, marketing to HR.
What is a steam trap and how does it work?
A steam trap is a valve designed to sense the difference between steam and condensate, and drain the condensate from the line. Steam traps allow only condensate and gases to drain and “traps” the steam in to provide heat and power.
What is the basic steam cycle?
Central to understanding the operation of steam propulsion is the basic steam cycle, a process in which we generate steam in a boiler, expand the steam through a turbine to extract work, condense the steam into water, and finally feed the water back to the boiler.
How far can steam pipe travel?
A general rule of thumb is that 1 psi of steam will raise water about 2 feet. For example, a 5 psi system should not have condensate lines higher than 10 feet above the steam trap. Not only must steam traps be piped off the bottom of the steam lines, the pipe must be properly sized.
What is included in the Steam Engineering tutorials?
These tutorials explain the principles of steam engineering and heat transfer. They also provide a comprehensive engineering best practice guide covering all aspects of steam and condensate systems; from the boiler house and steam distribution system up to the point of use; through the condensate recovery system and returning to the boiler.
How does direct steam injection work?
Direct steam injection involves the discharge of steam bubbles into a liquid at a lower temperature to transfer heat. This tutorial explains the process and the methods used, including the relevant heat transfer calculations.
What is the steam and condensate engineering Best Practice Guide?
They also provide a comprehensive engineering best practice guide covering all aspects of steam and condensate systems; from the boiler house and steam distribution system up to the point of use; through the condensate recovery system and returning to the boiler. Virtually all major applications and products are discussed.
How is steam generated in a steam power plant?
As mentioned before, steam is usually generated at high pressure, and the pressure may have to be reduced at the point of use, either because of the pressure limitations of the plant, or the temperature limitations of the process. This is achieved using a pressure reducing valve. A large variety of steam using plant exists.
