What is a SamKnows box?
The SamKnows Whitebox is a dedicated device for measuring your internet performance. It’s ideal for IT professionals, advocates of better internet and users who want assurance about their internet service. The latest version, Whitebox 8.0, is capable of measuring fixed-line broadband connections of up to 1Gbps.
What is SamKnows com?
SamKnows works alongside governments, consumers, ISPs, manufacturers, academics and industry to measure fixed and mobile broadband to help improve global internet performance. SamKnows remains a free resource for consumers and volunteers, who host a purpose-built internet measurement unit (the SamKnows Whitebox).
Is FTTC available?
The most widely-available is known as fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC), which uses fibre-optic cables from your provider’s broadband exchange to the green cabinets you see on your street. FTTC broadband is available to around 96% of UK premises, so there’s a very good chance it’ll be available to your home.
What is a white box system?
In computer hardware, a white box is a personal computer or server without a well-known brand name. For instance, the term applies to systems assembled by small system integrators and to home-built computer systems assembled by end users from parts purchased separately at retail.

The Measuring Broadband America (MBA) program is an ongoing nationwide performance study of broadband service in the United States that developed out of a recommendation by the National Broadband Plan to improve the availability of information for consumers about their broadband service.
How do I connect to Sam knows?
Connect the power cable to the SamKnows Whitebox, and press the power button on the back of the unit (labelled ON/OFF). The Activation LED light (2 revolving arrows) will flicker for approximately 30-60 seconds while it is activating and then stay on solidly once a connection has been made. Your set up is now complete!
What does FTTC stand for?
Fibre to the Cabinet
FTTC stands for Fibre to the Cabinet. The fibre optic cable is in place from the local telephone exchange to a distribution point (commonly called a roadside cabinet), hence the name fibre to the cabinet.
Do I need a modem for FTTC?
Fixed Wireless, Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) all have a nbn™ installed device that acts as the modem. This means these connections only require a router for WiFi. A great modem router is essential in order to get the most out of your nbn™ connection.
