How to lay sandstone paving
- Select an area that’s firm, level and well drained.
- Remove 125mm (plus the depth of the paving) of top soil/vegetation.
- Create adequate falls for drainage.
- Install edge restraints, these should be sufficiently robust.
- Lay a minimum of 100mm sub base.
What mix should I use to lay Indian sandstone?
The most widely used technique for installing concrete paving has always been a 10 parts sharp sand: 1 part cement dry mix. Techniques for laying Indian sandstone paving are different, the thickness variation of Indian Sandstone requires it to be laid on a 4 parts sharp sand: 1 part cement semi dry mix.
How wide should sandstone joints be?
The flagstones are laid in the usual manner, with standard width (12mm) joints as far as practical. If the receiving edges are being buttered , then the joints will not be topped up or pointed until after the balancing has been completed.
Can you jet wash sandstone?
Yes you can. A jet washer or pressure washer is an ideal way of cleaning Indian sandstone.

How thick should mortar be under pavers?
Should I use a mortar bed and/or slurry under my pavers? Pavers should always be laid on a mortar bed, and secured in place with slurry. A typical mortar bed is between 15 and 25 mm thick. Please make sure the sand is well graded and washed.
How much space should be between sandstone slabs?
Sandstone flags should be pointed with 10-15mm joints between each slab. Sawn paving can be pointed with 3-5mm joints between each slab. Pale sandstone paving is particularly porous and therefore we recommend sealing before laying the paving.
