How do I activate E-Verify?
To enroll in E-Verify, visit and click on “Getting Started” to view instructions for completing the enrollment process. At the end of the enrollment process, you will be required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that provides the terms of agreement between the employer and DHS.
How long does it take for E-Verify to be approved?
Timing. If you are using E-Verify to hire employees, your enrollment process could take between a few hours and a few weeks. The online enrollment should only take a few minutes, but it could take anywhere between 15 minutes and 3 weeks to receive a login from USCIS.
What documents do I need for E-Verify?
Make a copy of all U.S. passports, passport cards, Permanent Resident Cards (Form I-551) and Employment Authorization Documents (Form I‑766) presented by employees and retain them with Form I-9. The photo will display automatically in E-Verify during the verification process.
How is E-Verify done?
In the E-Verify process, employers create cases based on information taken from an employee’s Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. E-Verify then electronically compares that information to records available to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Employees must have a Social Security number (SSN) to be verified using E-Verify. As soon as the Social Security number is available, the employer can create a case in E-Verify using the employee’s Social Security number.

After your company is approved for enrollment, each program administrator will receive a confirmation e-mail that contains his or her user ID, temporary password and the required next steps. Your program administrator must: Log in to E-Verify with his or her user ID and temporary password (included in the E-Verify enrollment confirmation e-mail).
