Does fragging hurt corals?
Healthy corals recover better from fragging than damaged or sick corals do. It is generally a best practice to ensure your coral is healthy and growing in your tank for a few months before you try to frag it.

Can you frag coral in the tank?
You can frag any soft coral that is healthy and they will readily frag themselves. Soft corals grow so well, you probably need to frag them before they overtake another coral. Replace your coral back into the tank in low flow so the glue can finish curing.
Do you need to cycle a frag tank?
Yes, you would need to cycle and you would need some sort of filter on the tank so there is somthing to get bacteria growing on.

The frag plug refers to the substrate a coral frag rests on while it’s growing. You CAN purchase official frag plugs. But pieces of “rubble” you have lying around your saltwater aquarium work equally well. And when you’re starting out as a beginner learning to frag coral?
Do I need to Frag my coral?
If you have coral in your aquarium, but have not fragging yet, you may be blown away, once you start. One of my favorite aquarium hobby books is the Book of Coral Propagation, by Anthony Calfo. I didn’t have the confidence to frag corals before that.
Are LPS corals good to Frag?
LPS corals are a good choice to frag because they’re fairly easy to break apart, especially the branching varieties. But, overall, you want intermediate skills to keep most of the LPS species. Because of that, I’m going to make a slightly different recommendation for the beginner looking to frag coral.
How to fix a broken coral stalk?
Gently place the coral frag in an area of your tank with low flow and return the rock with the parent colony to its original location in your tank. Wait (this is the second hardest part). After some time, you’ll notice the damaged stalk growing a new discoid-shaped head. Meanwhile, the frag will attach to the live rock piece.
