Can you use expired ink?
If your printer ink isn’t long past the expiration date, chances are it’s still wet and completely usable. Attempting to use an expired cartridge shouldn’t harm your printer. If the cartridge is dry, the print job simply won’t go through.
How do you revive old ink?
Just add water to the jar and the ink will become liquid again. If you are in a hurry, crush the ink into small pieces, add water and stir. Voila you have ink. If you have a few hours, add water and stir occasionally.
How do I get around expired HP ink?
If you have a printer that expires ink cartridges (and allows you to override and continue working), you have a choice to make:
- You can press the “OK” button and keep using the expired cartridge.
- You can replace the cartridge with a new one and waste whatever ink remained in the old one.

Soak: dissolve dried ink on the nib by soaking your pens in a cup of hot water or rubbing alcohol. Forced air: remove the ink cartridge and blow on on the clean end to force ink to the nib. Fire: Hold your pen tip to a lighter flame for a few seconds to melt dried off a ballpoint.
Why do HP ink cartridges expire?
The expiration dates exist to prevent the printer components from damage. Over time, ink cartridges get clogged causing the printer to work harder and may result in the need for more expensive repairs.
How do you dissolve dried ink?
If you think your fountain pen dried out because of clogging, the first step is to try flushing it with warm water. The best way to do this is by unscrewing the pen, removing the cartridge and pouring warm water into the feed and through the nib to flush out any hardened ink or sediment.
