Can I use an iron for heat transfer vinyl?
Don’t worry, you can use a household iron to apply your heat transfer vinyl. Some HTV does apply at different settings, but standard heat transfer vinyl should be applied on the “linen” setting of your household iron. Instead of applying your HTV by ironing like you iron a shirt, you want to mirror a heat press.
Can you use an iron instead of a heat press?
An iron gives you a setting option, but you can’t really be sure of the exact temperature and the heat of all irons will vary. An iron also doesn’t allow you to lock in a pressure setting, so sometimes applying pressure to a product can be quite tedious and time consuming with an iron rather than a heat press.

To apply HTV with an iron you should follow those same guidelines but you should also: Use a Teflon sheet, thin pillow case or parchment paper (not wax paper!) on top of the design. You should iron the garment first to warm the material and remove any moisture that may exist.

10-15 seconds is the perfect pressing time. You don’t want to scorch the adhesive by keeping the heat on too long and over pressing.
Do you need a Teflon sheet for HTV?
Teflon Sheet A teflon sheet covers your design while you press. It is non-stick, so bits of heat transfer vinyl don’t get stuck to your iron or your press, and they help protect your design so it doesn’t melt to your press. The towel is not non-stick, but it will do the trick.
