Anthony Sand Dunes are closed from January 1 through sunrise on May 1. The smaller dunes, east of Egin Lakes Campground to Red Road are open year-round, but are usually covered in snow by January 1.
What caused St Anthony sand dunes?
The dunes formed about 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age when the Earth’s climate shifted. Eastern Idaho’s climate became warmer and drier. Lakes shrank, exposing fine sand. Persistent winds from the southwest blew the sand northeast across the lava plain visible in the lower left corner of the image.

Why are there sand dunes in Rexburg Idaho?
Rexburg, Idaho The Sand Dunes consists of more than 11,000 acres and were formed 10,000 years ago. Over many years, winds carried the sand from the nearby Teton and Snake Rivers and deposited them in the hills north of Rexburg. The hills used to be active volcanic vents thousands of years ago.

The city was named after Saint Anthony Falls in Minnesota. The railroad came to St. Anthony in 1899 and the first post office was established in 1901.
What can you do at Bruneau Sand Dunes?
Bruneau Sand Dunes Observatory Observatory tours and solar viewing starts about an hour before sunset. Then there is a short program about space and then you can use the telescopes at the observatory. There is a per person viewing fee but children 5 and under are free. The small fee is well worth it.
